New Castle County Head Start, Inc. Celebrates End of School Year and Presents Awards

(Newark, Del.) New Castle County Head Start, Inc. (NCCHS) marked the end of a successful 2015-2016 school year with celebrations at each Head Start center. The events featured a variety of games, crafts, activities and special guests for students and parents.

In addition, NCCHS held its Annual Award Luncheon at the Chase Center on May 23, 2016. Each year NCCHS presents awards to individuals that have gone above and beyond in their dedication to early childhood education. The annual award recipients are as follows:

  • 2015-2016 Lucy H. Borda Award: Since 2004, the Lucy H. Borda Award has been bestowed on the staff member who best represents the character of deceased staff member Lucy H. Borda. Borda held a strong belief in continued professional growth, regardless of personal challenges, and an ongoing determination to accomplish professional goals. The 2015-2016 Borda award was presented to Florence Muhammad, Classroom Aide at Absalom Jones center. Muhammad is a dedicated NCCHS staff member while also pursuing training and education opportunities. She is pursuing an associate’s degree in early education through the NCCHS cohort program with Delaware Technical Community College.  
  • 2015-2016 Eunice A. Thomas Employee of the Year Awards: Each year NCCHS recognizes those staff members whose individual efforts contributed to the program’s success throughout the year. Staff members from each of the eight Head Start centers and the administrative office voted for the person who best demonstrates a professional and positive attitude and willingness to go out of his/her way to help others. The 2015-2016 recipients are Roxanne Lundberg, Manor Park; Pamela Grey, Newark; Isela Estrada, Absalom Jones; Andrea Torres-Glover, Marshallton; Jordon Comerford, Administrative Office; Courtney Watson, Bear; Christina Lazpoulos, Lambson; Ronda Thomas, Claymont; and De’Zebbra White, Rose Hill.
