(Wilmington, Del.) During the month of October, New Castle County Head Start, Inc. will host Safety Fairs at each of the nine Head Start centers throughout New Castle County. The Safety Fairs will be held in memory of former Head Start students, Elijah and Alyssa Rivera Kupchinski, ages 6 and 4 respectively, who were tragically killed in a car accident on May 25, 2011. The fairs include educational activities for both parents and students.
Patty Kupchinski, grandmother of Elijah and Alyssa, will have a memorial exhibit at the Safety Fair and will discuss the importance of car safety with parents. Kupchinski has donated over 50 car seats to New Castle County Head Start, Inc. for parents. Larry Kelly, of the State of Delaware’s Office of Highway Safety, will lead a presentation for parents on car safety and assist parents with the proper installation of car seats.
Head Start students will also participate by performing a number of safety-themed songs to parents; creating crafts including car seat belts, helmets, traffic lights and stop signs; discussing the importance of car safety; and participating in fun activities that emphasis the safety lessons.
