(Newark, Del.) New Castle County Head Start, Incpresents annual awards and recognizes staff members for contributions during the 2012-2013 academic year.
Lucy H. Borda Award: Jennifer Matlack is the 2012-2013 recipient of the annual Lucy H. Borda Award. Since 2004, the Lucy H. Borda Award has been bestowed on the staff member who best represents the character of deceased staff member Lucy H. Borda. Ms. Borda held a strong belief in continued professional growth, regardless of personal challenges, and an ongoing determination to accomplish professional goals. Ms. Matlack, a former Head Start parent, began her career with New Castle County Head Start, Inc. as a substitute teacher in 1997 and was quickly promoted to teacher assistant. While working at New Castle County Head Start, Inc., she began her studies in early childhood education. In 2002, Ms. Matlack obtained her Child Development Associate certification and earned her Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Known for her smile and dedication to Head Start students, Ms. Matlack was promoted to classroom teacher in 2003 where she currently works at the Marshallton center.
Eunice A. Thomas Employee of the Year Award: Each year New Castle County Head Start, Inc. presents the Eunice A. Thomas Employee of the Year Award to staff members for outstanding individual contributions during the program year. Staff members from each of the nine Head Start centers and the administrative office voted for the person who best demonstrates a professional and positive attitude and willingness to go out of his/her way to help others. This year’s winners are Torriane Evans from Claymont; Elyise Greene from Absalom Jones; Jasmine Goldsboro from Bear; Wendy Marsilii from the Administrative Office; Liliana Ortiz from Marshallton; Sheileen Ortiz Torres from Lambson; Mercedes Reyes from Rose Hill; Joleen Schilling from Manor Park; Jayne Tyler from Newark; and Robin Yancey from Brandywine.
New Castle County Head Start, Inc. recognized staff members for long-term service to the agency:
- Judy Guttenplan from the Administrative Office retires after 11 years,
- Helen Friend from the Bear center retires after 12 years,
- Stephanie McManus from the Rose Hill center retires after 22 years,
- Diane Taylor from the Bear center leaves the agency after 28 years, and
- Nancy Williams from the Rose Hill center retires after after 33 years.
